The X-Trail features the world’s first production Variable Compression Turbo (VC-Turbo) engine. This patented 1.5-litre 3-cylinder unit can physically transform its compression ratio from 8:1 (for performance) to 14:1 (for efficiency) on the fly. It is paired with a 12V ALiS mild-hybrid system for better torque assist and idle-stop functionality.

Despite its compact displacement, the engine delivers a healthy 161 bhp and 300 Nm of torque. The variable compression ensures that the SUV feels punchy when overtaking but remains fuel-efficient during steady-state cruising, with a claimed ARAI mileage of 13.7 kmpl.
