Gearbox Type: Electronically Controlled CVT (e-CVT)
Unlike a traditional belt-and-pulley CVT, Toyota’s e-CVT is a planetary gear set that blends power from the engine and two electric motors. This "Power Split Device" eliminates the need for a clutch or torque converter, providing a seamless, shift-free driving experience that is significantly more durable than conventional transmissions.
Drive Type: Electronic On-Demand AWD
The 2026 RAV4 AWD system is entirely electronic. There is no mechanical driveshaft connecting the front and rear axles. Instead, a dedicated rear electric motor powers the rear wheels independently when the system detects slip or during heavy acceleration. This reduces mechanical loss and improves fuel economy compared to traditional AWD systems.
Clutch Type: None (Power Split Device)
Due to the hybrid architecture, the RAV4 does not utilize a traditional friction clutch or a torque converter. The engine and motors are permanently engaged through the planetary gear system. Engagement and disengagement of the engine are handled by controlling the speed of the MG1 motor, allowing the engine to start and stop invisibly while driving.
