Gearbox: 8-Speed Steptronic Sport
All 2026 3 Series models utilize the ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission. The "Sport" variant in the M340i includes steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, faster shift times, and a Sprint function for maximum acceleration during overtakes.
Drive Type: AWD (xDrive)
The xDrive system provides rear-biased intelligent all-wheel drive. It can distribute 100% of torque to the rear wheels in normal conditions but can divert power to the front axles within milliseconds if wheel slip is detected.
Clutch: Hydraulic Torque Converter
The Steptronic transmission uses a multi-plate lock-up clutch within the torque converter to provide a direct mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels, minimizing energy loss and providing a manual-like feel in sport modes.
