Unlike the dual-clutch units in the A4/A6, the S5 uses a high-torque 8-speed Tiptronic transmission. This torque-converter automatic is specifically chosen for its ability to handle the V6's high torque while offering smooth, rapid shifts that can be controlled via steering-mounted paddle shifters.

The S5 features a "true" permanent Quattro system with a self-locking center differential. Under normal conditions, it sends 60% of torque to the rear for a sporty feel, but it can instantly redirect up to 85% to the rear or 70% to the front depending on traction.
