Gearbox Type: 8-Speed Satellite Aided Transmission (SAT)
The Phantom features a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission that is "Satellite Aided." Using GPS data, the car sees the road ahead—detecting hills, sharp turns, or motorway junctions—and selects the optimum gear in advance. This ensures the gear shifts are completely imperceptible to the passengers, as the car is always in the correct gear before the driver even reaches the obstacle.
Drive Type: RWD (Rear-Wheel Drive)
The Phantom maintains a traditional Rear-Wheel Drive layout to preserve the steering feel and the classic "push" sensation of a luxury limousine. To aid maneuverability in tight city spaces, it utilizes an all-wheel steering system; the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels at low speeds to reduce the turning circle.
Clutch Type: Torque Converter
The transmission uses a heavy-duty hydraulic torque converter rather than a dual-clutch system. The torque converter provides the fluid, smooth take-off that is a hallmark of Rolls-Royce, eliminating the "jerkiness" often associated with automated manual or dual-clutch gearboxes at low speeds.
